Mercat de les Flors

Aquest edifici és un altre dels palaus construïts per a la Exposició Universal de 1929. Després va passar a ser Mercat Central de Flors de Barcelona. A principi dels anys 80, i seguint un suggeriment del director teatral Peter Brook, va ser reconvertit en teatre, conservant el mateix nom: Mercat de les Flors. Aquest dimecres, i malgrat la pluja, hem anat amb La Colla a pintar a aquesta zona, on he pogut fer, aixoplugat sota una cornisa, aquesta aquarel•la on el més destacable, com podeu veure, son els reflexes del terra.

Mercat de les Flors
This building is another of the palaces built for the 1929 Universal Exhibition. Afterwards, it became the Flowers Central Market of Barcelona. In the early 80’s, and following a suggestion of the theatre director Peter Brook, it was reconverted in theatre, keeping its former name: Mercat de les Flors (Flowers Market). This Wednesday, despite of the rain, we have gone with ‘La Colla’ to paint in that environment, where I have done, shield under a cornice, this watercolor where the most remarkable thing, as you can see, is the reflections on the wet floor.

Coures, mangos i un pomelo rosa

Aquest és el darrer bodegó que he pintat al taller. M’ha costat un parell de sessions llargues, per la quantitat d’elements que hi intervenen i per la dificultat d’aconseguir el color de tres tonalitats diferents de coure.

Coppers, mangoes and a rosé grapefruit.
This is the last still-life I have painted at the workshop. It took two long sittings, due to the amount of pieces involved and the difficulty of getting the different tonalities of the three pieces of copper.

Modernisme & Racionalisme

Avui, amb la Colla dels Dimecres hem anat al Parc de Montjuïc. Allà, m’ha agradat oposar dos estils arquitectònics no massa llunyans en el temps, però totalment diferents en la concepció: l’ edifici modernista de l’antiga fàbrica Casarramona, avui reconvertit en seu del Centre Cultural CaixaForum, i el pavelló d’Alemanya que l’arquitecte racionalista Mies Van der Rohe va projectar per l’Exposició Universal de 1929, i que algú va tenir la bona idea de reconstruir en el seu emplaçament original.

Art-Nouveau & Rationalism

In our weekly exit with “La Colla dels Dimecres” we have gone today to the Montjuïc Park. There, I felt like contrasting two architectural styles not very distant in time, but completely different in its conception: the art-nouveau building of the former textile factory Casarramona, reconverted today in the Cultural Centre CaixaForum, and the German pavilion that was designed by the rationalist architect Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe for the 1929 Universal Exhibition, and which somebody had, a few years ago, the happiest idea of rebuilding in its original location.

La Rambla de Badalona

A la sortida d'aquest Dimecres amb la Colla hem anat a Badalona, on hem estat convidats pel grup de Belles Arts d'aquesta ciutat. Jo, com molts altres, he pintat la Rambla, per la vistositat que tenen les seves palmeres.

Rambla of Badalona
Last wednesday we went with "La Colla" to paint to the next town of Badalona, so close that you can reach it from Barcelona by the subway. I painted, as many others, the Rambla, due to the showiness of its palm trees.

De nou, el Pallars

Aquest cap de setmana he anat de nou al Pallars Sobirà, i he aprofitat per fer a 'plein air' aquestes tres aquarel•les, les dues primeres amb llum de matí i la tercera, de tarda.

PALLARS, AGAIN
Last week-end I went again to Pallars Sobirà, and I took advantage to paint 'plein air' these three watercolors, the first and second in morning light and the third in the afternoon.

L'Hospital de Sant Pau

La sortida d'avui amb la 'Colla dels Dimecres' ha estat dedicada a aquesta altra joia de l'arquitectura modernista, que esta en fase de remodelació per deixar de ser hospital i convertir-se en seu de no se quin organisme europeu.

Sant Pau Hospital

In today’s exit with ‘la Colla dels Dimecres’ we went to this other jewel of Art Nouveau architecture, which is undergoing renovation to abandon its former dedication to hospital to become the seat of some European organism.

Ampolles

Aquest és el meu primer intent de treballar sobre paper fet a mà, que és el més semblant que es pugui imaginar al paper secant. Absorbeix al moment tot el color que li posis, no deixant rectificar ni una pinzellada. Tot i que no m’agraden els papers que no absorbeixen, penso que aquest no serà el meu paper preferit.

Bottles

This is my first attemt to work on handmade paper, which is the closest imaginable thing to blotting paper. It absorbs all the color the moment you lay it on, not allowing any correction. Although I dislike those papers that don’t absorb at all, I guess that this one won’t be my favorite paper.

El Parc Güell de Gaudí

A la sortida d'ahir amb la Colla dels Dimecres anàrem al Parc Güell, i em vaig ficar a sota del viaducte perquè el dia amenaçava pluja, com així va ser. Tot i estar continuament assetjat per la quantitat de 'guiris' i criatures que hi havien allá, vaig poder fer aquesta aquarel.la.

Yesterday we went with 'La colla dels Dimecres' to paint to Gaudi's Parc Güell. Since the day was threatening rain (as it happened), I installed my easel under the viaduct. Despite of the quantity of tourists and children constantly surounding me, I could accomplish this watercolor.

Mamão com laranja

La primera vegada que vaig anar al Brasil vaig quedar sorprès per la varietat de ‘sucos’ que et feien al moment a qualsevol cantonada, amb fruites que en aquell temps encara eren poc freqüents aquí. Menció apart del de maracujá, el que més em va agradar va ser aquest de ‘mamão com laranja’ es a dir, com es pot veure, papaya amb taronja. Ja fa dies que tenia ganes de pintar un bodegó sobre aquest tema, i ho faig com un homenatge personal a aquest meravellós país. (Amb el permís d’en Manel i de la seva taronja. )

PAPAYA WITH ORANGE
The first time I went to Brazil I was amazed by the variety of made at the time fruit juices that you could drink on any corner, with fruits that weren’t too frequent here in that time . Not to mention the passion-fruit’s, the one I liked the most was this one of papaya with orange. From some weeks on, I have felt like doing a painting upon this subject, so I 've done it as a personal tribute to this wonderful country. (With the permission of my colleague Manel and his orange.)
